Our Young Leaders are chosen for their musical skill, their leadership ability, and their drive to develop and use these tools to impact the world around them.

Established in 2015 by Sistema England with an immersive inaugural programme of workshops, sectionals and orchestral sessions, the national Young Leaders Programme provides an opportunity for accomplished young musicians from across the country to form new relationships, learn from inspiring musicians and teachers, receive personalised coaching and work together to build their own orchestra within just a few days.

Past highlights of the Young Leaders Programme have included:

  • Performing at London’s Southbank Centre during the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra residency

  • Masterclasses with renowned musicians such as double bassist and Chineke! founder Chi-Chi Nwanoku MBE, and Venezuelan violinist and Artistic Director of Portugal’s Orquestra Geração, Juan Carlos Maggiorani

  • Summer picnic and private opera house tour at Longborough Festival Opera

  • Workshops with Nicola Benedetti and Roderick Williams

  • Participating in the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra residency hosted by Sistema England at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2018

Could you, or a person you know, be a Young Leader? Applications for the 2024 Young Leaders Programme are not yet open, but watch this space for further announcements!

I learnt that I can ask for help from my peers even though I feel anxious doing so. Sometimes I feel inadequate compared to them, but I shouldn’t measure my progress using someone else’s achievements. Instead I should focus on how to make the most of the situation.
